A place for scholarship, collegiality, creativity, respect, innovation, inclusivity, learning, growth, discovery, and courage.

Never has there been a more exciting time to be a mechanical engineer. In our department, we are developing the fundamental science and application engineering required to create autonomous robots, AI for design and reliability, sensors and interconnects for quantum computing, 3D printing of machine components and soft tissues, and the mechanical elements of renewable energy systems ranging from wind turbines to solar cells.

I’m excited to work together on these developments with members of our world-renowned faculty, which includes Fellows of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Physical Society, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and other leading societies and associations. Most importantly, our faculty focus their research on areas that can have a significant positive impact on our local community, our nation, and the world.

We especially value sharing this research and our passion for mechanical engineering by mentoring the next generation. Our students have a wide range of classes to choose from, and learning does not stop in the classroom. We also provide a wealth of experiential learning opportunities, ranging from our award-winning Terps Racing and Robotics at Maryland teams through our Engineers Without Borders and Solar House activities to our study abroad programs in Costa Rica, Iceland, and Japan. And every student gets to do a project of their own choosing in their senior year, with their work then showcased during our Capstone Design Expo.

The possibilities here are endless for those with the imagination to dream and the willingness to persevere. Experience and create the future in mechanical engineering with us!

F. Patrick McCluskey, Professor and Interim Chair

Our vision is for the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland to make meaningful contributions to the knowledge and tools that will enable society to pursue a path of sustained prosperity and well-being.

Our Mission

Current and emerging societal needs call for mechanical and reliability engineers who combine basic and specialized competencies to find effective, flexible, and accessible solutions to real-world challenges. We meet this call by providing world-class engineering education of the highest quality and comprehensive scope to new and continuing learners.

The rapidly advancing cutting edge of science and technology calls for advances both within and outside the engineering disciplines. We meet this call by leading new fundamental discoveries, facilitating groundbreaking research at interdisciplinary interfaces, and furthering the translational application of knowledge gained through research for the public good.

This mission shall be guided by a commitment to continuous improvement in the overall quality of teaching, research, and service. It shall be based on close partnership with participants and entities across the spectrum of society, including industry, government, community organizations, professional associations, and other academic institutions in a spirit of collegial cooperation and mutual benefit.

The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland is to promote the study and application of mechanical and reliability engineering science and computation in service of the public good.
