Taqui Mahmood received the 2020 American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) Senior Award. During his time at Maryland, he served as both president and public affairs officer of the University of Maryland chapter of ASME.
What does winning this award mean to you?
I am extremely honored to receive the 2020 ASME Senior Award. Serving on the ASME executive board for three years and leading it as the President for two of those years made ASME an enormous part of my life at UMD. The organization has been set on a tremendous growth trajectory through the hard work of old and new executive board members, and I am excited to see the heights it will reach in the future.
What is your favorite moment in Mechanical Engineering?
My favorite moments in mechanical engineering would have to be the time I spent with Andy, a man who suffers from cerebral palsy. My Deaign Day team’s mechanical engineering capstone project was to design and build a pill and water dispenser that Andy could easily operate to take his daily pills without any need for assistance. The positivity he radiated during every interaction I had with him is something I will keep close to me forever.
What are your future goals or aspirations?
My goal is to work in product development within the sustainable energy sector and eventually move into business development, such that I can have an actual impact in the world’s transition towards clean energy.

What does winning this award mean to you?
I am happy to accept this award, I only wish I had joined ASME sooner in my college career.
What is your favorite moment in Mechanical Engineering?
Playing ping pong in the ASME lounge between classes.
What are your future goals or aspirations?
I’ll be working at Siemens Smart Buildings after I graduate, and I hope to excel at my position there.
