Terps Racing Formula Team Competes at National Competition
Terps Racing, the University of Maryland Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) formula vehicle racing team competed in the 2005 the Tire Rack SCCA Solo2 National Championships on September 13-16 at Forbes Field in Topeka, Kansas. While it was the first year for Maryland students in this event, chassis and suspension design leader Michael Cook finished 15th, and group leader Bryan Hise finished 9th. Other competing university formula SAE teams were top level schools that have been participating in FSAE for over a decade, such as the University of Texas Arlington, Auburn University, and the University of Kansas teams. The Maryland team competed against past champions as was well as four top-ten finishers in this race. “None of them expected us to be this strong. We were congratulated on the quality of our car many times. While our young program still has work to do before were at the top, it’s a leap in the right direction,” says Bryan Hise. Hise, Cook and the Terps Racing team have spent much of the summer of 2005 competing at the Washington D.C. Region Sports Car Club of America (WDCR-SCCA) Autocrosses. The WDCR-SCCA sponsors the Maryland FSAE team with free driving school and free entry into their autocross events. Terps Racing and drivers Mike Cook (entrant #33) and Bryan Hise (entrant #133) plan to compete again on Sunday, October 9 at the WDCR-SCCA Championship at FedEx Field in running group (heat) 4, group A (FSAE) Afternoon 1 session in FedEx Field Lot E & F, 1600 FedEx Way Landover, MD 20785.
