Assistant Professor S.K. Gupta Receives Outstanding Systems Engineering Faculty Award
Satyandra K. Gupta is the recipient of the ISR Outstanding Faculty Award, which promotes cross-disciplinary research of the highest caliber. Criteria for selection include: closeness to the theme of ISR, creativity, innovativeness and excellence in research, and cross-disciplinary character and team research effort.
S.K. was nominated for this award by Dana Nau, Guangming Zhang and Mike Ball. He did his dissertation at Maryland with Nau and Zhang on the topic of computer-aided manufacturability analysis for machines parts. This 1994 work has had a landmark impact on the field. They received a best paper award at ASME's Computers in Engineering Conference for the work.
S.K. has been a faculty member at Maryland since 1998. He has been conducting research in process planning for small-batch manufacturing, web-based manufacturability analysis services and a new multi-stage, multi-piece molding process to create geometrically complex heterogeneous objects.
Mike Ball says, "In my view, during the short time SK has been a faculty member his contributions have been nothing short of phenomenal. He was recently ranked as one of the University's top 100 'rainmakers.' This is quite an accomplishment for an assistant professor."
In the past year he has received an ONR Young Investigator Award, an NSF CAREER award, the SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer award, and the best paper award at the 1999 ASME design technical conference.
As Dana Nau points out, "It is unusual for a young researcher to receive any one of these awards, let alone all four!"
He has been proactive in getting research funding, has acquired much-needed equipment for the CIM lab through two NSF grants, and is playing a key role in developing strategic partnerships between ISR, government and industry. Recently he took the leadership role in working with Toshiba.
