Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering
A minimum of 36 credit hours of coursework beyond the bachelor’s is required for the Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering.
- At least 12 of these credits must be completed at the University of Maryland.
- A minimum of 12 semester hours of dissertation research is also required.
In addition to coursework requirements, Ph.D. candidates must successfully complete a qualifying exam, a research proposal presentation, and an oral exam administered by a committee of graduate faculty members in defense of their dissertation.

Advisor
During the application process, students should identify the faculty member whom they would like to serve as their coursework and research advisor. For research assistants, the faculty providing the financial support is also the advisor. A student’s advisor will also serve as chairperson of the student’s Dissertation Committee.
