UMD ME Faculty Ranked in Top 2% of Scientists Worldwide

Who are the top 2% scientists worldwide? A ranking developed by Stanford University Professor John Ioannides identifies these high achievers–and it includes several faculty members from the University of Maryland’s Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME). The ranking system is based upon scientific citation data going back to the year 1788.

UMD ME faculty members Balakumar Balachandran (chair), Amr Baz, Hugh Bruck, Nikhil Chopra, Abhijit Dasgupta, Don DeVoe, Steven Gabriel, Ashwani Gupta, Bongtae Han, Jungho Kim, Jay Lee, Teng Li, Mohammad Modarres, C.D. “Dan” Mote, Michael Pecht, Reinhard Radermacher, Peter Sandborn, Elisabeth Smela,Jelena Srebric, and Bao Yang were ranked in the top 2% based on career-long citations.

In a separate ranking, based on single-year citations (citations for 2021), Balachandran, Baz, Siddhartha Das, DeVoe, Avik Dutt, Hosam Fathy, Samuel Graham, Jr. (dean, A. James Clark School of Engineering), Katrina Groth, Ashwani Gupta, Kim, Johan Larsson, Lee, Li, Modarres, Pecht, Radermacher, Sandborn, Smela, and Yang all made the top 2%.

The ranking system includes scientists in 22 fields and 174 sub-fields. Based on career publications, Professor Balachandran ranked 0.03% out of 125,973 scientists in the subfield of mechanical engineering & transportation; other such rankings included Baz (acoustics, 0.18%); Bruck (mechanical engineering & transportation, 0.5%); Chopra (industrial engineering and automation, 0.7%); Dasgupta (mechanical engineering and transportation, 0.1%); DeVoe (analytical chemistry, 0.5%); Gabriel (operations research, 1.1%); Gupta (0.2%); Han (electrical & electronic research, 0.8%); Kim (mechanical engineering & transportation, 0.5%); Larsson (aerospace & aeronautics, 2.2%); Lee (industrial engineering & automation, 0.9%),Li (nanoscience & nanotechnology. 0.8%); Modarres (strategic, defense & security studies, 1.7%); Mote (mechanical engineering & transportation, 0.5%); Pecht (applied physics, 0.6%); Radermacher (mechanical engineering & transportation, 0.6%); Sandborn (electrical & electronic, 0.5%); Smela (nanoscience & nanotechnology, 0.3%); Srebric (building & construction, 1.6%); and Yang (nanoscience & nanotechnology, 0.4%).

UMD subfield rankings based on single-year (2021) publications include Das (chemical physics, 1%); Dutt (optics, 1.4%); Fathy (industrial engineering & automation, 1.9%); Graham, Jr. (applied physics, 2%); Groth (strategic, defense & security studies,1.7%), Gupta (energy, 0.3%), and Larsson (aerospace & aeronautics, 2.2%).
