In U.S. News and World Report's annual ranking of graduate school programs, Mechanical Engineering at Maryland ranked 20th in the nation (up from 24th last year), 14th in publics. The Clark School is ranked 17th among engineering schools in the nation, 11th among the top ten public university engineering programs in the country.

In early 2007 The Chronicle of Higher Education ranked the University of Maryland’s Department of Mechanical Engineering in the A. James Clark School of Engineering among the top 10 mechanical engineering programs in the country (PDF, 13 pages; scroll to page 8), providing dramatic evidence for the Department’s growing visibility on the national stage. Mechanical Engineering at Maryland ranked tenth in its category, 4th among public institutions, headed by UC-Berkeley, Georgia Institute of Technology (#5), and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (#9). The survey examines the number of book and journal articles published by each program's faculty, as well as journal citations, awards, honors, and grants received.

The Institute of Higher Education and Center for World-Class Universities continues to rank the Clark School 13th in the world among all engineering programs for 2008. The institute, a unit of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, based the rankings on total engineering-related research expenditures, highly cited research articles, articles included in the Scientific Citation index and the percentage of articles published in the top 20 percent of engineering journals.

The University of Maryland jumped from No. 111 to No. 79 in a ranking of universities around the world published by The Times Higher Education Supplement.

In the The Times Higher QS World University Rankings 2007, the campus is ranked No. 7 among U.S. flagship campuses, No. 11 among U.S. public colleges and No. 30 among all U.S. colleges. View the rankings online. View the university press release on the rankings online.
