I am currently studying the wave
propagation in rods and shells with variable geometry and stiffness properties.
The numerical models are formulated using the Spectral Finite Element
Method(SFEM) and the energy mapping of different configurations are compared to
match experimental results through the Wavelet Transform (WT),which visualizes
the signal simultaneously in the time and frequency domain and hence fully
describes the frequency contents of the waveform resulting from the applied
excitation as it propagates along the structure. Tapered profiles generate a
cut-off frequency, below which waves will not propagate along the structure. In
other words, they are capable of filtering out low frequency vibrations and
hence behave as high-pass mechanical filters.(This is shown in the 2 figures
attached.) The same approach will be also applied to tapered rotating shafts in
order to investigate the effect of variations of material and geometric
properties on the characteristic Campbell diagram.
